Our Review

The Belt Serious Lifters Choose

The SBD Belt has become the default choice for competitive powerlifters, and for good reason. It combines a 13mm thick, single-piece leather construction with SBD's patented gliding lever mechanism β€” a design that solves the biggest problem with traditional lever belts.

The Lever Mechanism

Traditional lever belts use a fixed-position lever that requires a screwdriver to adjust. If you gain or lose weight, bloat between squat and deadlift sessions, or just want a slightly different fit, you are stuck. SBD's lever slides along a track, allowing you to adjust tightness on the fly without any tools. You open the lever, slide it to the desired position, and lock it down. It takes seconds and it holds rock-solid under maximal loads.

Construction and Materials

The belt is made from a single piece of vegetable-tanned leather, 13mm thick and 10cm wide (the maximum allowed in IPF competition). The edges are finished cleanly, and the leather is stiff out of the box β€” it takes 4-6 weeks of regular use to break in fully. Once broken in, it moulds to your torso shape while maintaining its rigidity under heavy loads.

How It Performs

Under a heavy squat, the SBD belt provides exceptional intra-abdominal pressure support. The consistent 13mm thickness means you get even support around the entire circumference. On deadlifts, you can quickly loosen the lever one notch to accommodate the different torso position. The patented buckle makes this adjustment trivially easy compared to any other belt on the market.

Sizing and Fit

SBD provides a detailed sizing guide based on navel circumference. It is critical to measure carefully β€” this belt is tight by design, and being between sizes is uncommon if you follow their chart. Most lifters wear it 1-2 notches tighter for squats and 1 notch looser for deadlifts.

The Bottom Line

The SBD Belt is expensive. There is no way around it. But it is a once-in-a-lifetime purchase that will outlast your lifting career. If you squat and deadlift regularly and want the best belt available, this is it. The adjustable lever alone justifies the premium over traditional lever belts.
