Our Review
The Bar That Built a Thousand Garage Gyms
If you are building a home or garage gym and can only buy one barbell, the Rogue Ohio Bar is the answer. It is a multipurpose 28.5mm bar that handles everything from heavy deadlifts to clean and jerks without being a specialist in any single discipline β and it does all of it exceptionally well.
Build Quality
The Ohio Bar is made from 190,000 PSI tensile strength steel, manufactured in Columbus, Ohio. The knurling is moderate and consistent β grippy enough for heavy pulls without tearing your hands apart on high-rep sets. The dual knurl marks (Olympic and powerlifting) give you reference points for any lift. The bar has a moderate whip, making it suitable for both controlled powerlifting movements and dynamic Olympic lifts.
Finish Options
Rogue offers the Ohio Bar in several finish options: bare steel, black zinc, e-coat, cerakote, and stainless steel. Bare steel offers the best feel and grip but requires regular maintenance. Cerakote offers the best corrosion protection and comes in multiple colours. Stainless steel is the premium option β best grip feel with excellent corrosion resistance, but at a higher price point.
How It Performs
Under a squat, the bar sits comfortably across the back with no sharp knurl edges digging in. On the bench, the moderate whip helps with stability. For deadlifts, the 28.5mm diameter and quality knurl provide excellent grip. For cleans and snatches, the bar rotates smoothly on its bushings β not as freely as a dedicated Olympic bar with needle bearings, but more than adequate for most lifters.
Who Is It For?
The Ohio Bar is perfect for the general-purpose lifter who trains a mix of compound movements. If you compete seriously in Olympic weightlifting, you may want a dedicated Oly bar with needle bearings. If you compete in powerlifting, the Rogue Ohio Power Bar (29mm, more aggressive knurl) might be worth considering. For everyone else β and that is most of us β the Ohio Bar is the one.
The Bottom Line
Rogue backs this bar with a lifetime warranty against bending or manufacturing defects. At its price point, you are getting a bar that will outlast you. This is a buy-once-cry-once investment that defines what a quality barbell should be.
